Getting Started in Canvas (Student)

Miami Dade College uses Canvas as the LMS (Learning management system) for the courses students take at the college. Canvas gives you access to course tools, material, collaboration and communication with your instructors and classmates.

Hardware and Software requirements

It is a good idea to check Canvas browser and computer requirements to confirm optimal performance.

Canvas access

  1. Go to MDConnect and log in with your user name and password to activate your Canvas account. It is important that you activate your student account BEFORE your first day of class.
  2. To log into Canvas  Go to mdc.edu., click on "Portals" scroll to  down to "Canvas" under Student. Log in using your MDC user name and password. Log in access to Canvas will be granted 4 days before the start date of your first course.
  3. Click on the Canvas Dashboard tab to view your course(s) and click on the course you would like to access.

  • Please note that the process of syncing MDConnect and Canvas is not immediate and takes approximately 4 hours.
  • Remember, your full MDC email address is not your user name. Do not include @mymdc.net.
  • For the best experience in Canvas, please use the latest version of Chrome or Firefox web browser.

If your course is missing

  • Verify if your course is listed in Courses > All Courses, and if it doesn’t appear in your Dashboard you should ensure your course is marked as favorite in All Courses.
  • If your course is not listed in All Courses, check the following:
  1. Have you confirmed that you are enrolled at MDC?
  2. If you are not, you must first enroll in the course via MDConnect in order for the course to then appear in Canvas.
  3. If you register for a course that has already started, it may take up to 24 hours for the course to appear in your Canvas dashboard.
  4. Has the official start date of the course begun? You will not be able to view or access your course until the official start date of your course.
